We love a good festive feast as much as anyone, but rich foods, flowing drinks, and late-night grazing can send your digestive system over the edge, ruining the festive vibes. Here are five easy tips from Genna, our naturopath and herbalist, to keep your gut happy through the festive season.
1. Prioritise Fibre First
Holiday platters of cheese, dips and starchy carbs can overload our gut quickly. Reach for veggies, greens and fruit first on grazing plates. Fibre feeds good bugs, slows blood sugar release and keeps the bowels moving.
2. Stick to Your Routine (Where Possible)
Keep to your routine as best you can. Our gut is a creature of habit, especially with meal times. Don’t hold off eating to save room’ as this can lead to blood sugar and stress hormone spikes and disrupted bowel function.
3. Move After Meals
A 10-minute walk after food can improve digestion and reduce blood sugar crash.
4. Use Bitters Strategically Bitter Herbs
Bitters before, with or around meals. Bitters after alcohol. Bitter herbs stimulate every part of our digestive process and activate our livers' detoxification process. Our aromatic bitters are the absolute best for this and delicious in sparkling water or added to other drinks.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar
Taken in the morning and before meals. 15ml of apple cider vinegar or 1 tablespoon can reduce a blood sugar spike by up to 30%. Better digestion, better energy, no crash. Reach for Flora tonic or Verdita diluted in water or straight up Apple Cider Vinegar.
Good luck out there folks,
xx Genna Pyewacket
