Questions about Shrub Drinks
What is a shrub?
A shrub is a fermented drinking vinegar. Ours are made with fresh fruit, herbs and raw organic apple cider vinegar, then fermented, never pasteurised. Traditionally, shrubs were used to preserve fruits and herbs when they were plentiful. Mixed with sparkling water, they make a delicious and complex botanical shrub soda.
Will it taste like vinegar?
Not the way you might expect. Shrubs are tangy and balanced with sweetness from the fruit. They're fruit-forward and not as sweet as cordial or soft drink. We use the most incredible organic apple cider vinegar that has its own depth of flavour.
Are shrubs safe during pregnancy?
Absolutely! Shrubs are 100% alcohol free and loaded with vitamins from fresh fruit. Shrub sodas are a delightful special drink for everyone.
Do shrubs contain sugar?
Yes. We use a little raw sugar to kick start the fermentation process, providing food for the beneficial bacteria. Other than that, most of the sweetness in our shrubs comes from the fruit content. Once diluted our shrubs are a low sugar drink. No artificial sweeteners, ever.
Do they need to be kept in the fridge? Will they survive delivery?
Yes, pop them in the fridge as soon as you get them. Our shrubs are preserved through fermentation not pasteurisation, so the mother culture is still alive and active. They're fine out of the fridge for a week or so - they travel happily in the post. Because they're a live ferment they can get a little fizzy if they get too warm for too long, but they don't go
